So how easy is it to back up all the DFS roots in a Domain?
You could write some scripts using the "DFSCMD" tool and output it to a text file. This of course requires some scripting knowledge and is still quite cumbersome to maintain.
A much better approach is our DFS Backup tool. Simply run once to set the number of copes to keep, and the output path to where to save the files to.
Now you can either run the tool manually, or set up a task schedule to run in an automated mode.
In the automated mode DFS Backup will automatically query Active Directory for all the DFS roots and back them up. No need for any configuration changes if roots are added or deleted.
The backup files are plain text and can be very easily edited and restored, great when transferring from one root to another.
The main screen is very simple, at start up all the DFS Roots in the current domain will be displayed. Roots can then be selected and backed up.
The backup files will be saved in the folder indicated by "Backup path". The "Versions to keep" will limit the number of backup copies kept, each one labeled with the backup date.
Once these options are set, DFS Backup can be run in an automated mode, all DFS roots will be automatically selected and backup according to the settings above.

Restoring DFS links is as simple as selecting the appropriate backup file and selecting the links to restore.

If the link exists it will be optionally overwritten, otherwise the link will just be recreated.
